The Effect of Laser New Technologies on the Smart Factory

Not all factories are able to transition to lights-out production, where autonomous robots inhabit a plant and no lights are required, where rows of machines operate in the dark.

3D printing has seen a lot of press in recent years because of its potential to create almost any interface or product at a low cost. For a long time, 3D printing was restricted to the production of plastics, which was done layer by layer. However, technology has progressed to the point that several businesses will 3D print aluminum, concrete, and other components for applications such as replacement car parts, airplane wings, concrete bridges, complete residential homes, and more. There are also farms of 3D printers that can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with little human intervention as they produce devices.

Over the last five years, the use of robots in factories has increased dramatically; they can now be seen on factory floors, in industrial facilities, and in logistics. Collaborative robots, or cobots, are now being emphasized as a way for humans and robots to collaborate together toward a shared purpose. Such cobots are simply mechanical weapons that can be used for activities like welding, circuit board molding, or attaching electronics, while others are bigger equipment capable of heavy lifting or even cooking.

laser technology

Meanwhile, applications such as laser material handling, laser micromachining, laser branding, and laser engraving are demonstrating the growing use of industrial lasers in manufacturing. The use of laser technologies allows manufacturers to add value to the goods they make. Engraving custom names or signatures, barcoding several items at once, inserting identifying markings to avoid counterfeiting, and making a variety of laser marks on a variety of materials including bare metals, polished metals, anodized metals, and plated metals are only a few examples. In any scenario, the work can be completed in minute detail.

Laser engraving can also help secure intellectual rights by including serial numbers, time stamps, part numbers, product names, data matrix code markings, branding, and industry-specific tags, all of which have a high-quality mark that can be readily interpreted by barcode scanners or other inventory-tracking equipment. Furthermore, laser systems may be wired to a plant network, opening up new possibilities for system repair, tracking, service, remote troubleshooting, and product support.
